Hickory Cane Corn
Our new addition of Hickory Cane Corn comes from seeds donated by Glenn Campbell. He obtained the corn from State of Tennessee Senator Frank Nicely (Tennessee Govt.) who owns a huge farm on the banks of the Holston River, Morristown, TN. A whiskey brewery in Knoxville, TN located the Hickory Cane Corn in the Tennessee/Kentucky Mountains and gave it to Frank to grow for them. It was also popular with moonshiners and legal whiskey distillers. Glenn tells us that the Hickory Cane Corn is an all round corn, and that in the milk stage it is eaten as sweet corn. It then can be used as fried corn fritters, hominy, grits, pickled, and the best corn meal for cornbread and great for roasting ears. It is very versatile. The Hickory Cane Corn is a pre 1875 corn that was originally developed by the Native American People of Northern Florida and Southern Georgia. As we know, the ancestor of corn came from Mexico and was then developed in Central America and then into South and North America. The Cherokee Indians were given this corn by the other tribes in Florida and Southern Georgia. The white settlers were in turn given the Hickory Cane Corn by the Cherokee. It became the staple food source on the frontier over the entire Southern Appalachian Mountains.
