The Goode Bean was given to Bill by a fellow UB director, James B Goode in Harlan county and he had gotten it from his FIL a minister, who lived in Morehead in Rowan County who got it from a sawmill operator in Lee County. When Bill contacted him, he told Bill "Oh no, we don't grow that anymore, our kids wanted us to 'get with the program' and grow Blue Lakes." When he received it, the bean seed was mixed with at least three different beans. From which we ultimately ended up two more -- the popular NT Half Runner and the Basin Mountain Bean (a mutant from the NT Half Runner). Both of these bean seeds were carefully selected over the years and grown out for several years to ensure they grew true to the NTHR and Basin Mountain. With both of those beans well established, Bill decided to go back to the Goode Bean this year (2025) and grow again to see what is would look like.
